Heads, homogamous, non-rayed, sessile, aggregated in dense, stalked glomerules, substened by 3 ovate, reduced leaves. Flowers 2-5, bisexual. Corolla purple or white. Stamens 5, auricled at base. Ovary oblong; style arms subulate. Achenes 10-ribbed; pappus of 4-6 spiny bristles.
