Baliospermum solanifolium (Burm.) Suresh

Synonym: Baliospermum montanum (Willd.) Müll.Arg., Croton solanifolius Geiseler

Vernacular name: Cheriyadanthi, Danthi, Dantika, Kadalavannakku, Nagadanthi

Habit: Undershrub

Habitat: Moist deciduous forests and field borders; also shaded places

Distribution: Bangladesh, Myanmar, Java, Malay peninsula, India

Flowering and Fruiting: August-April

Key identification features: It is subshrubs having simple, alternate leaves that are broadly ovate, often 3-lobed. The perianth lobes are 4 and are pubescent. Numerous stamens are found on a central receptacle, with slender filaments. The ovary is densely tomentose, and the style is 2-fid. The capsule is 3-lobed containing ovoid seeds with caruncles.

Uses: Root paste is applied to painful piles and swellings. Leaves are used in treatment of asthma and seeds are used in snakebite.
