Synonym: Myrtus caryophyllata L. 

Vernacular name: Cherujara, Pottinjaval, Shenjarel, Kani, Karinjara

Habit: Tree

Habitat: Evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, also in the plains

Distribution: India, Sri Lanka

Flowering and Fruiting: February-January

Key identification features: Trees up to 6m high with obovate-oblong leaves.

Flowers bisexual white, in terminal corymbose cymes; berry globose, black.

Uses: Fruits are widely used in folk medicine for diabetes. It is also used for digestion disorders including gas (flatulence), bowel spasms, stomach problems etc.
