Habit: Shrub

Habitat: Semi-evergreen, evergreen and moist deciduous forests and wastelands

Distribution: India, Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri-Lanka

Flowering and Fruiting: August-January

Key identification features: These shrubs have leaves that are ovate, with an acute apex, and at the base, they are cordate (heart-shaped) and strongly oblique. The female spike is stout and erect, while the male spike is slender and also erect. These shrubs have 2 stamens. Fruit is a berry.

Uses: It is used as a condiment in various dishes.Useful in bronchitis, abdominal pains, and diseases of the spleen tumors.
