Vernacular name: Kannadikalli (Tamil)

Habit: Shrub

Habitat: including dry thickets, coastal savanna, wasteland, hillsides and along roadsides

Distribution: Tropics

Flowering & Fruiting: April-August

Key identification features: Devil's Backbone is a common succulent in house gardens. The fleshy tubular stems are thin pencil like, grow zig zag and produce thick, dark-green or variegated, fleshy, cordate leaves. To some, the flower bracts resemble a slipper, hence one of its names. Devil's Backbone has bright white and pink coloured flowers.

Uses: Anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antiseptic, antihemorrhagic, antiviral, antitumoral, and abortive
