Dimocarpus longan Lour.

Vernacular name: Chempoovam, Chempunna, Malampoovathi, Pasakotta, Poripuna

Habit: Tree

Habitat: Evergreen and semi-evergreen forests

Distribution: Indo-Malesia

Flowering and Fruiting: March-August

Key identification features: Large buttressed trees, up to 25 m tall. Bark brown, flakes when mature; inner bark cream. Leaves compound, imparipinnate or paripinnate, alternate, clustered. Inflorescence terminal and axillary, much branched panicles; flowers sessile.

Uses: Fruit is eaten raw or cooked. The flesh of the fruit is administered as a stomachic, febrifuge and vermifuge, and is regarded as an antidote for poison.
