Key identification features: Erect,
profusely branched herb with grooved stems and sharp divaricate spines. Leaves
ovate to elliptic-lanceolate with an attenuate base and obtuse apex. Flowers found
in terminal panicled spikes or axillary, sessile clusters. Male flowers with 5
stamens; female flowers with solitary ovules and 2-3 stigmas. Fruit a
circumcissile utricle with minute discoid seeds.
